My family originates from Finland. It is one of the Nordic countries included in the Scandinavian design movement that promotes minimalism, functionality, and simple beauty. Elements of these design principles are prevalent in the custom homes I design.

What is Scandinavian design?

Scandinavian design first came to prominence in the 1950s from the northern European countries of Norway, Denmark, Sweden, and Finland.

These countries have one thing in common: long, dark winters followed by bright, sunny summers, much like we experience in Ontario. Those harsh winters result in a style where elaborate design is set aside in favour of clean lines and a sturdy structure.

Scandinavian design embraces minimalism and functionality, evoking a sense of calm and comfort. It combines beauty, simplicity, and a practical dynamic.

The architectural focus is livability. The design focuses on comfort and provides you with that at-home feeling. By blending functionality and beauty, the design helps create an inviting home that you’ll love for years to come.

What are the elements of Scandinavian design?

1) Site-specific design

Building homes that fit the natural world is central to Scandinavian design. The house should merge with the natural world. There is no need to clear-cut and bulldoze the land. Instead, the building should accentuate the surrounding land, becoming immersed in nature.

2) Clean, simple lines

Simple, clean lines are a hallmark of the minimalistic approach. There is not a lot of ornate or excessive detailing. Instead, the space features simple sophistication, which is appreciated over time.

3) Natural light

Large windows maximize the light coming in. Strategically placed, they allow the warm winter sun to warm the space, lessening your need to turn up the thermostat.

4) Quality-made, natural materials

Wood and other natural materials create a welcoming feeling and promote a connection to nature. They are timeless in their visual appeal and are quality building materials that will increase the longevity of your home.

5) Functionality & comfort

Less is more. That permeates all aspects of Scandinavian design. Everything has a purpose or job to do. Every detail is intentional and necessary. It results in a decluttered, stress-free space that allows you to move freely and enjoy.

Is Scandinavian design just a trend?

Scandinavian design has deep roots. It is built on simplicity and functionality, two elements that never go out of style. It is not flashy or ornate. Those are the elements of design that go out of style.

With natural building materials, clean lines, and an abundance of natural light, it creates an inviting space and will be enjoyed for years to come.
